FAQ’s

MOT FAQs

Most cars in the UK need their first MOT when they are three years old, and then every year after that. Booking your MOT before the expiry date helps you stay legal and gives you time to deal with any issues that might come up. It is a good idea to check your due date in advance rather than leaving it until the last minute.

In most cases, no, you should not drive a vehicle on the road without a valid MOT. The main exception is if you are travelling to a pre-booked MOT appointment, but the vehicle must still be roadworthy. Driving without a valid MOT can lead to fines and may affect insurance, so it is always best to book ahead.

An MOT checks that your vehicle meets the minimum legal standards for road safety and environmental performance. It covers key areas such as lights, tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, mirrors, seatbelts, wipers and emissions where relevant. It is not the same as a service, so it does not replace regular maintenance.

If your vehicle fails, you will be told which items caused the failure and whether there are any advisories to be aware of. The next step is usually to have the necessary repairs carried out before a retest. A good garage will explain the issues clearly and help you understand what is essential, what is advisory and what your options are.

Yes, most customers prefer the convenience of having any necessary repairs carried out by the same garage after the MOT. That can save time and make the process simpler, especially if the fault has already been identified. Once the work is complete, the vehicle can then be prepared for its retest.

An MOT test itself is usually fairly straightforward, but the exact time can vary depending on the vehicle and the workshop schedule. Many customers choose to leave the car with the garage for part of the day to allow flexibility. Booking in advance can help you find a convenient slot.

Car Servicing FAQs

An interim service is generally suited to drivers who cover higher mileage and want an extra check between annual services. A full service is a more comprehensive routine service for most vehicles, while a major service is the most in-depth and usually includes a wider range of replacement parts and inspections. The right choice depends on your mileage, service history and how you use the car.

Many drivers book a service once a year, but some vehicles need attention sooner depending on mileage and manufacturer guidance. Short journeys, stop-start driving and heavier use can all increase wear over time. Keeping to a regular service schedule is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of unexpected problems.

Yes, regular servicing can help spot worn parts, low fluids and developing faults before they become more serious. While no service can guarantee that a car will never break down, routine maintenance lowers the risk and supports safer, more dependable motoring. It also helps keep the vehicle running more efficiently.

A reputable local garage should always explain any additional work before going ahead. Clear communication matters, especially when a customer is deciding what needs doing now and what can be planned for later. Straightforward advice helps people make informed decisions without feeling pressured.

Tyres & Wheels FAQs

Tyres should be checked for tread depth, sidewall damage, cracking and uneven wear. If the tread is getting low or the tyre shows signs of damage, it is best to have it inspected promptly. Worn tyres can affect braking, grip and safety, especially in wet weather.

A car pulling to one side can be caused by several things, including incorrect tyre pressures, uneven tyre wear, wheel alignment issues or worn steering and suspension parts. It is worth getting the vehicle checked rather than ignoring it, as the problem may worsen over time. Early attention can also help prevent unnecessary tyre wear.

Yes, proper wheel alignment can make a noticeable difference to how your car drives. It can improve steering feel, reduce uneven tyre wear and help the vehicle track more evenly on the road. It is particularly worthwhile after replacing tyres or suspension components.

General / About the Garage FAQs

Yes, Threshfield Garage is a family-run business owned by Graham and Yasmin Hargrave. That family approach is reflected in the way customers are treated, with friendly service, honest communication and a strong focus on long-term trust. Many people prefer an independent garage for exactly that reason.

Yes, the garage welcomes a wide range of makes and models for routine maintenance, MOT testing and repairs. Independent garages often see a broad mix of vehicles, which means practical experience matters just as much as equipment. If you have a specific vehicle query, it is always sensible to check when booking.

Threshfield Garage is based at Unit B Airedale Trading Park, Skipton Road, Crosshills, Keighley, BD20 7DS. The location is convenient for customers travelling from Cross Hills, Keighley, Skipton and the surrounding area. It is a practical base for drivers looking for a trusted local garage with straightforward access.

Booking in advance is usually the best option, especially for MOTs, servicing and busier periods in the workshop. It helps the garage plan its schedule and gives you a better choice of appointment times. If you have an urgent issue, it is still worth calling to see what availability there is.

Meet The Team

Behind Threshfield Garage is a knowledgeable, approachable team committed to keeping customers safe on the road.

Graham Hargrave

Founder of Threshfield Garage. Graham built the business from the ground up with his business parter Paul at the time, starting in 1983 in the small village of Threshfield within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. He ran the workshop with a small team of mechanics and worked alongside the community keeping the locals and their vehicles moving for many years. Now in Crosshills, Graham has taken on many new customers and helps the community and businesses in the local area as well as still looking after many of his original/loyal customers that followed him from Threshfield. In the 80’s Graham used to enjoy going away with the Toyota rally team looking after John Midgley of Midgley Motor Cars. He then moved on to rallying himself and competed in many events over the years. However, in any spare time he gets now, Graham goes along to events when he can, helping look after other drivers and their vehicles, recently involved with a driver in the Junior F1000 Rally England & Scottish Championships.

Yasmin Hargrave

Yasmin joined her husband Graham in 2004 to help run the business and to carry on serving the community/locals & tourists. Yasmin ran the fuel pumps that the old Garage in Threshfield used to have alongside the small shop selling confectionary, car consumables, gas bottles and domestic fuels etc. When moving to Crosshills Yasmin carried on the books for the business from home alongside taking on Grandparenting responsibilities.

Ricky Browne

At the beginning of 2010 Ricky joined Graham in Threshfield working and helping run the workshop. However, in June 2014 when Threshfield Garage relocated to Crosshills, Ricky stayed in the village with his young family due to his commitments working as an on-call firefighter. Then in 2019 he joined Graham again and became a partner within Threshfield Garage. From being a young boy Ricky has tried his hardest to compete in any racing event he could but nowadays his weekends are taken up with his son’s racing, travelling the country to different events and putting his passion of anything with an engine and wheels into helping his son compete in karting and rallycross events. Most recently alongside this he has been using his spare time to work alongside a professional race team being their number one mechanic.

Sarah Browne

In the recent few years Sarah has come on board Threshfield Garage part time to help her father; Graham with the secretarial side of the business. Sarah has always been committed to her father and helped when she could, even in the past when in Threshfield, towards the running of the family business while bringing up her two children. Now in Crosshills and with the children getting older, she has joined her father & husband at the Garage and helps her mother; Yasmin with the paperwork side of things.

Accreditations and Credentials

Threshfield Garage operates as a DVSA-approved MOT testing station, giving customers confidence that MOT tests are carried out to recognised official standards. This approval reflects the garage’s commitment to quality, safety and professional workshop practice.
